Music App Redesign

UI/UX Design

The Problem

This project for my Principles of UX Design class involved choosing an uncommon app in the App Store to redesign. Based on my love for music,

I chose to redesign functions in the music app, Trebel. Designed to provide easy streaming and downloading of music for users while also providing revenue for the artists, this app allows users to stream and download music for free, listen to music offline. The app boasts that it doesn’t take up much space, drain battery, or use much data. Users can download music for free by watching short advertisements and gaining ‘coins’. The advertisements are meant to compensate the artists so that the music isn’t being downloaded illegally or improperly. The company hopes to compete with popular music streaming

apps and sites.

My Process.

User Research.

Raw Data and Data Analysis:

I asked 3 students to use the app and interviewed them after using the app to gather feedback on their experience and pain points.

Patterns: users struggled with searching for music, navigating through search results, finding the songs they were looking for, they all followed a similar task flow, function of buttons weren’t explicit.

Assumption: The search function is not efficient and needs to be revised to display relevant results.

Design.

Based on the data I received, this app has many areas that need improvement. All of the users had difficulty performing the selected tasks using the app due to the layout and information not making the task flow easy for the users. The app’s search feature didn’t provide relevant results or display the results logically, causing users to become frustrated with the app and confused. Improvement of the organization of the search function and its results would increase the number of users using the app to stream and download music. So, I focused primarily on redesigning the search experience of the app.

Sketches

After creating thumbnails and sketches to explore different layouts, I developed storyboards to understand the task flow for users when searching for a song. I used those storyboards to generate my wireframes.
